How it works

File sizes, downloads and storage are quoted in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. This converter moves between them, with a clear choice of decimal or binary scale.

In the decimal (SI) scale each step is ×1,000, so 1 GB = 1,000 MB. In the binary scale each step is ×1,024, so 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GiB in your operating system.

Use it to check download times, compare storage, size backups or make sense of the gap between advertised and actual capacity.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 1 TB drive show less space?

Drives are sold in decimal terabytes (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes) but operating systems often count in binary, where 1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. The same drive therefore reads as about 931 GiB.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB is decimal (1,000,000 bytes) while MiB is binary (1,048,576 bytes). Network and storage marketing use MB; memory and many file managers use MiB.

Which scale do drive makers use?

Drive manufacturers usually label storage using decimal units.
