How it works

Thinking of going electric instead of petrol? The big difference shows up in the cost per kilometre. This calculator puts the two side by side for the same trip.

For the EV it works out kWh consumption times the electricity price; for petrol, litres times the fuel price. You then see how much you save, in both amount and percentage.

An EV is usually cheaper per kilometre, but the result depends on your local electricity and fuel prices.

Frequently asked questions

Is electric always cheaper?

Usually per kilometre, yes, but if electricity is expensive or you charge on public fast chargers, the gap narrows or reverses.

What does the comparison leave out?

Only the trip’s energy cost. It excludes purchase price, insurance, maintenance and battery depreciation.

Where do I find kWh consumption?

In the vehicle specs (kWh/100km) or on the car’s display after normal use.
