How it works

Manufacturer figures are optimistic. The only way to know your car’s real appetite for fuel is to measure it from an actual tank, and that is exactly what this calculator does.

Fill up, drive normally, then note the litres of your next fill-up and the kilometres covered in between. Economy in L/100 km = litres ÷ km × 100. Burning 42 litres over 600 km works out at 7.0 L/100 km, which the tool also shows as km/L and MPG.

Measuring across two or three tanks gives an even more reliable average, since one trip can be skewed by motorway or city driving.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure it accurately?

Fill the tank to the same click both times, reset the trip meter, drive as usual, then divide the litres of the second fill-up by the distance travelled. Averaging a few tanks smooths out the result.

Why is my real economy worse than the brochure?

Lab tests run in ideal conditions. City traffic, short trips, cold starts, air conditioning, roof boxes and a heavy right foot all push real consumption higher.

Which unit is best?

L/100 km is common in Europe, while MPG is common in English-speaking markets.
